1.Canon PowerShot D30 – Best Waterproof Camera For Snorkeling
If you are looking for snorkeling without paying a high price for the best waterproof camera, then your option is right here.
The Canon PowerShot D30 is a compact waterproof and solid camera that is capable of proceeding deeper under water than every other watertight camera on the market without using a different underwater housing.
The D30 is constructed around a 12MP CMOS sensor, and a 28-140mm F3.9-4.8 lens. The camera is shockproof to 6.5 feet, and temperature immune from 14deg to 104degF. The D30’s built in GPS tracker records time and the place of videos and all pictures you capture.
The Sunlight LCD style that is brand new promises to correct a common grievance with watertight cameras, making it simpler to see the computer screen in bright sunlight.
Since it can not genuinely hope to compete with a committed diving cameras its additional 25m diving depth, seven metres deeper than its nearest competitor and very impressive on paper, is truly not much of an edge in real life.
It’s a good looking camera, with some good characteristics and fine handling, but at the asking price it is not really so good value in comparison to its competitors.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve read all the reviews on all the waterproof cameras available today, you’ve combed over comparisons by the pros, at this point you need to know if the Canon PowerShot D30 is worth the money, and if you need an extremely durable waterproof camera that takes great photos, I am here to tell you that it absolutely is.
It is a great little camera with fabulous fabulous quality pictures. you should love this Canon D30 for what it is: Extremely durable, waterproof, all-purpose camera that takes great photos full of vibrant color. And don’t attempt to judge it for what it ain’t: A DSLR or professional-level camera that gets photos you can print to the size of your wall.
The D30 shines submerged and its new external design makes it one of the very ergonomic rough cameras out there. But, the direct competitors of the D30 can go. Image quality is not awful compared to cameras that are match, but a tendency can make photos seem uninspiring.
The Powershot D30 will allow you to dive deeper than any of its own competitors, with its 25-metre depth evaluation being leagues ahead of the opposition. The camera’s two-metre shockproofing and -10oc freezeproofing are more typical stats however, and unlike the Olympus TG-3, Panasonic FT5 and Ricoh WG-4, the D30 does not have a crushproof evaluation.
This is an excellent digital point and shoot camera for virtually any venture. Shockproof from falls of up to five feet, capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, and waterproof till 33 feet, you can shoot this everywhere a it will perform.
It has exceptional noise reduction so you don’t get grainy specs on your photos, and the optical image stabilization system makes sure that your hands are trembling the pictures or if you are moving come out steady with no blur.
Two other things you’ll enjoy about this are its good wide angle capacity and skill to shoot great pictures in low light settings.
The D30 does one thing which other cameras in this category can not do–it can accompany you on dives as deep as 82 feet.
It is worth thought, if this is a prerequisite. But should you not have the demand to shoot a camera that you are much better off spending only a little more cash on our Editors’ Choice, the Olympus Tough TG-4. You will get a broader, more rapid lens; a screen that is better back; Wifi; and a macro style that is great.
The Canon PowerShot D30 doesn’t have too many bells and whistles, but that’s a good thing if you are looking for ease of use while exploring the underwater world or desire to catch some pictures at the beach. This 12-megapixel compact camera is the deepest diver of the tough cameras available on the market, with a depth rating of 82 feet.
The D30 is, in addition, shockproof when dropped from up to 6.5 feet and works under a range of temperatures from 14 F to 104 F — for anything from ice fishing to sunbathing. The rubberized grip on the front panel provides a solid handhold.
This is strictly a point-and-shoot camera, without any manual exposure controls. But Canon has outfitted it with a number of special shooting modes, including fisheye effect, toy camera effect, super-slow motion picture at 240 or 120fps and various color effects choices.
- Image quality is very good
- It has the best ‘features’ or ‘scenes.
- Low light performance, even under water is very good
- Video options are good.
- Lens (wide angle to zoom) is pretty nice.
- A little bulky.
- Battery life isn’t great, especially while using GPS
This is a specialty camera for taking passable snapshots underwater and under inclement conditions. Significant concessions in image quality were made to “ruggedize” the camera, and these are apparent even under ideal conditions. This is true of all cameras of this type to date, and this camera is no exception.
It works in the rain. It works under the lawn sprinkler. It works in the pool. It works at the beach. You can prop it up or set it down on wet or snowy or muddy surfaces to stabilize a shot, and just rinse it off later. If you truly need a rugged waterproof camera, the Canon D30 is a very nice option. Given the balance of features, image & video quality, and price, I happily give this 5 stars.

I have let my kids take a few photos with this camera and the first time they dropped it, I held my breath thinking that the camera was a goner but the camera survived the fall!
The shockproof feature of this camera is great especially for people with small children around. Little fingers like to pick up things that aren’t theirs and many times they end up dropping those things! Now I don’t have to worry about my child getting ahold of it because I know it is almost childproof as well as shockproof! If this came in a smaller version, it would be almost perfect but I’m happy with the rest of it!
Overall, the Nikon COOLPIX S33 is an extremely durable and easy-to-use camera – the S33 is a success. if you were looking for a first camera to buy your kids, we’d recommend the S33 over any Fisher Price or “toy” camera.

6.Nikon COOLPIX AW100 – Best Compact Waterproof Camera
If you are looking for a compact waterproof camera, the Nikon COOLPIX AW100 Waterproof Digital Camera may be is the best choice.
The Coolpix AW100 is Nikon’s first watertight, weatherproof camera. Made to match the likes of the Panasonic FT3 and Olympus TG-810, this snapper is watertight to 10 metres and comes loaded with a 28 mm wide-angle lens. It is also equipped with a 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS detector, which is quite uncommon in watertight compacts at this sort of cost.
The AW100 has a built in compass, each of which function fairly nicely and GPS. Like the TG 810, you may utilize these to label pictures with the direction where the camera was facing as well as the place at which they were shot. The Nikon AW100 shoots a little over a minute to locate the GPS place in broad, open spaces.
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a streamlined water- and weatherproof snapper aimed in general at divers, hikers and outdoor types. Nevertheless, susceptibility and the lens are somewhat disappointing, which gets us favor competitors such as the Panasonic FT3.
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a great little camera for anyone who likes to snorkel. It’s easy to use and took good underwater pictures. Further, It is more compact, easier to use and waterproof, cold proof, drop resistant, etc..
it good enough for most uses, at a price that you wouldn’t expect to be getting gallery quality, anyway. This is a great “life-proof” camera. Have used it in the pool, lake and ocean. dropped it banged it up. does not dent or scratch easily. Takes outstanding pictures. Very easy interface and simplistic menus.
Waterproof, shockproof, and freeze proof. What more could a person need in a camera? I’m not a professional photographer but I wanted a camera that could withstand what I was going to put it through! I live in a place that has various climate changes throughout the year and needed one that wouldn’t freeze to death if I left it in my car.
I also like to take photos when I am at the beach with my friends but had a camera get ruined when I forgot it was in my pocket and I went into the water. This was my first waterproof camera and I wasn’t sure what to expect as far as picture quality but I’ve taken a few photos underwater and they turned out amazingly sharp. I even recommended the Nikon Coolpix AW100 to a few friends because it has been able to stand up to my torture.
If you are looking for a camera that has “beauty fix” and other add ins to make your pictures pretty, this is not your camera. If you are looking for a no shit camera that can take some punishment and provide beautiful pictures, this is it. I’ve recommended this camera to so many friends and I’ll continue to do so. I love it!
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is very lightweight making it easy for me to carry in my pocket and the LCD screen is pretty big compared to other digital cameras I’ve had. It makes it easier to get a great shot when you have a bigger screen to see it through.
This camera also has a GPS and a clock on it which I use quite often and the GPS has come in very handy. When I’m travelling, the clock stays on time even adjusting itself to the time change. I really like the GPS because it shows where every photo was taken in case I forget. Everything about this camera is simple and easy to use. I have not had to spend a lot of time fiddling around with the buttons and settings to get a good photo as it always does a good job.
I really have no complaints about the camera. I don’t expect to get professional quality photos with it but it does the job for what I need it for. I just enjoy taking photos of my family and friends and different places that I travel to. I’m not looking to be a professional photographer with this camera but I’m happy with it.
- Lightweight – For traveling, hiking, water sports, having a light camera is good.
- The plastic looks tough and durable.
- Screen is larger and higher res – 460k instead of Panny’s 230k
- Image is higher res – can be good or bad
- Action button – this sounds gimmicky, but it actually works! It serves as a large button for GPS tracking, and changing modes without having to fiddle with buttons
- Stereo sound – useful in videos where you’re filming cyclist/athletes zooming past and creates more realistic feel
- Clock – It’s clock can synchronize with your location
- GPS – it actually works! It can log your route at intervals for period of 6 – 72 hrs, embed POI info, and select different levels of details
- VIdeo HS – high-frame rate slow motion video are possible with this little camera. Initially, it sounded silly but as a sports and all-weather camera, I can certainly see great uses for this feature.
- Movie light – This gives additional light to dark subject at close distance when its very dark
- Greater ISO range – with ISO 3200 you can take photos in darker situations than with a Panny
- Smile trigger – Kids love this… We use this instead of self-timer so that when we take a family photo, the camera detects a smile and clicks it for us.
- the camera ships with a battery charger that requires a separate cord.
The high definition video recorder on this camera works great, too. Last week, some friends of mine went to a pool party and we got some hilarious shots underwater. Everyone was surprised at how crisp and clear they turned out.
Even in a darker setting, the lighting on the camera is perfect so that everything is viewable in the video. I like how I can take this camera with me everywhere and don’t have to worry about it getting wet or dirty. I’ve even dropped it a few times and it still works.
I also go to a lot of sporting events and have gotten some really great action shots. When I tried taking photos with other cameras, the action shots always turned out too blurry and were deleted. With this camera, I can count on it to catch every action, throw and kick.
All in all the Nikon COOLPIX AW100 camera was a good pick up. I would highly recommend the AW100 camera to anyone who is looking for an outdoor/waterproof camera, or someone who needs a slightly more durable camera. hopefully, this will help some individuals decide whether or not this is the right camera for them.

The Panasonic DMC-TS3 Digital Camera waterproof, dustproof and freezeproof in layout with the capability to record high-definition movie in AVCHD format.
It featuring a 28mm wide-angle lens, the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode and GPS function, this versatile camera allows you to get your moments regardless of what the planned shooting terrain is. Swim along with tropical fish and get shots of amazing coral reefs, or shoot records of friends and family around a camp fire.
This is actually the camera for adventurers (ski, snow, hike, climb), campers and other types who enjoy the great outdoors and want a fully featured, top quality camera. It is also ideal for younger adults who may have a tendency to be less careful with electronics because it is virtually indestructible.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC TS3 is a cute little camera that is small enough to take everywhere but rugged enough to stand up to accidents and abuse. It’s shockproof, waterproof, and freezeproof so there is really not much you can do to this camera to make it stop working correctly. It’s tough enough to handle almost any climate or a forgetful user who may forget to bring it inside during the cold winter months.
The PanasonicTS3 has numerous settings that can be used to catch great photographs in a variety of places. I can take pictures on the beach, underwater, or during a snowstorm and don’t have to worry about them coming out blurry or washed out. The settings ensure that everything is in focus and that the colors are captured beautifully.
I like the wide angle lense on this camera because it has enabled me to capture some beautiful scenery shots or if I am out and about with a bunch of friends I am always able to get everything into the photo without them all being squished together.
I have used this camera in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold with no problems at all. I’ve even dropped it a few times and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 has proven how shockproof it really is!
It is super easy to share photos from this camera when all I have to do is push a few buttons and hook the camera up to the computer, and the photos are uploaded wherever I want them. I’ve had other cameras in the past that made it difficult to share the photos and it always seemed like it was a big task but Panasonic has made it very simple. My kids can even do it when they want to send photos to their grandparents quickly!
The LCD screen is great and I like how it can adjust itself. Most LCD screens can be difficult to see especially when in bright sunlight, but this one can adjust itself to any type of conditions so that you can actually see what it is that you are shooting and you can view the photo as soon as you take it.
I’ve taken a few photos underwater. This camera does a good job in clear water but in muddy or darker water, not so much. I wasn’t expecting to get top quality underwater photos with this camera but for fun in a pool, it has taken great photos. When we go on our vacation next month in Hawaii, I’m going to try it out there and hope to capture some great shots.
I originally purchased this camera because I wanted to try my luck at taking some photos underwater. I go diving once in awhile on family trips and have been amazed at how beautiful sea life is.
I wanted to try my photography skills out underneath of the water to see if I could capture the colorful fish and coral that lives below the sea. After researching numerous underwater cameras, this one seemed like the best value for the money.
11.Nikon 1 AW1 – Best Waterproof Shockproof Camera
If you or your children are prone to dropping things or if you prefer to venture out in extreme temperatures or dusty trails or sandy beaches, one of these tough cameras might be for you.
These waterproof shockproof camera are simple to carry and shoot great photographs in environments that are light, too.
The Nikon 1 AW1 offers the flexibility of an ILC with the submerged capability of a camera that is rugged. This original camera is great for the experience enthusiast.
The Nikon 1 AW1 is a water-, freeze-, dust- and shockproof streamlined system camera featuring a 14.2-megapixel “CX” format sensor and the Nikon 1 lens mount. Boasting continuous shooting speeds of 15fps with continuous autofocus and 60fps with fixed-point autofocus, Complete 1080p HD video capture, an ultra-rapid hybrid auto focus system, Greatest Moment Capture and the unique Movement Snapshot Way, the Nikon AW1 also offers more standard shooting modes like Programmed Auto, Aperture and Shutter Priority, in addition to Metered Manual.
The AW1 was designed especially to fulfill the needs of an active lifestyle demographic and this camera will most likely find an enthusiastic audience among divers, extreme sports enthusiasts, backpacking voyagers, and serious shots searching for a compact camera with plenty of creative and extreme surroundings potential.
12.Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10
At first glance, the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 actually looks like a cell phone. It is small and thin and I wasn’t quite sure about purchasing it because of its small stature but after reading some of the reviews I decided to try it out for myself. I got the camera and I really liked the feel of it.
It is small and easy to fit into my coat pocket or pants pocket when I am out and about somewhere. I find it annoying to have to carry around a big bulky camera just so I can take a few photos especially if I am on a long hike or travelling across country. This camera fits perfectly wherever I go and isn’t much bigger than my wallet.
All of these are things that I have been looking for in a camera. I wanted a camera that could withstand everything that I put it through. I’m accident prone and a bit forgetful and don’t want to have to purchase a new camera every time I forget to bring the camera in out of the cold or drop it on the ground.
The 3D feature on this phone is really cool to play around with. I didn’t realize that a camera could do such a great job creating a 3D photo. The iSweep panorama is really fun, too. We have played around taking various photos with these two settings and have come up with some amazing shots.
The back illumination image sensor has come in very handy with this camera. I’ve always had a problem getting a good photo in a darker setting but the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 has the ability to sense when there is not enough light for the photo and it adds the correct amount of light to give you a great pic. You can’t even tell that the photo was taken in low light. This comes in very handy at night time.
- It is waterproof, freeze-proof, dustproof, and shockproof
- The 3D still image feature
- The sensor for low light feature
- Battery life is short,
- Not included Mini HDMI to HDMI cable.
I’ve played around with the background defocus feature on this camera. It works really well especially if there are people or other objects in the background that I really don’t want to be in the photo. It also gives some of the photographs a little extra touch and they look more professional with the background blurred out. You just have to make sure not to use it all the time especially when you want the background in the photo.
I have no problems sharing the photos from my Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 as I can upload them right to my computer and then share them easily with family and friends. All in all, this camera is simple to use and always captures a good photo in any type of lighting or setting. I have no problems with this camera so far and am happy with the purchase.
The Kodak EasyShare Sport C123 is a great little camera and it is very easy to use and takes great pictures above and underwater. If you’re looking for a simple point-and-shoot that you can take underwater, this camera is great.
When turning on it is ready to take pictures very quickly. It takes great pics in/under the water and you can also record videos but no zoom when in video mode.It is a must have underwater camera. Excellent price and takes great pictures. I 100% recommend to anyone. Even a good camera for kids.
The kodak c123 camera is a great choice for someone that wants much higher quality than disposable cameras, wants to take underwater pictures, and has another camera for the rest of your high quality day-to-day pictures . If you are planning a vacation where you will be taking underwater photos in shallow water, you should buy one. Given the price, this is really a very nice camera .
Still being an underwater photography novice, I had some bad experiences with underwater cameras in the past. They seemed to not last very long or the photos underwater turned out horrible. I was a little unsure about purchasing the Kodak Easyshare Sport C123 camera but after reading some reviews I decided to give it a shot. I really wanted a camera that I could do everything with and that would last more than a few months.
The 12 megapixels really make the photos come out sharp and clear and the high def photos look very professional. My family and I are avid swimmers and we love taking photos underneath of the water, and you can get some really great shots with this camera! We also do a lot of hiking and I needed a camera that could stand up to rain as well and a few bumps and scrapes here and there.
The video on this camera works great, too. We have taken a few videos in the water and out of the water. Even in the water you can see and hear everything. We have had a lot of fun with this camera and we take it with us everywhere we go. I’m thinking about purchasing another one for my teenage daughter because she is always breaking things and I think that this one would stand up to her!
Another feature I really like about this camera is the easy share feature. It is definitely easy to share photos and videos from the camera. All you have to do is push a button for where you want it sent to and it does the rest! Makes it very easy to share everything with family and friends without having to download them all to my computer and then upload them somewhere else to share.
- Very cheap.and simple to operate.
- Dust-, sand-, and water-proof. Plenty of sharing options.
- Autofocus can be used during video recording.
- Only takes AA batteries.
So far I have had no problems with this camera. It has done everything I’ve wanted it to and still works even after dropping it on a cement floor! I don’t have to worry about getting any dust or dirt on it either as it is dust proof. I like the scene detection on this camera because I don’t have to stop to change the settings on it if I want to take a photo in the dark or somewhere with low light. It can sense what type of setting you are in and makes sure that the photo comes out clear even when the conditions are not perfect.
I wish we could take this camera deeper than 10 feet below water because I would really like to take it deep sea diving and would want to go deeper than 10 feet. That is one of my only complaints about the Kodak Easyshare Sport C123.
That and the fact that the batteries don’t last very long but it could be because we use it so often but we just keep extra batteries on hand in case we need them. I wasn’t expecting to get professional quality photos with this camera but it works for everything we need it for!
If you want a camera for the rest of your life that may take pictures in and out of water, you might want to consider investing is something a little higher in quality, but for getting a majority of your underwater shots, invest in EasyShare C123 camera over disposables. Trust me, it’s worth it!

14.Sony DSC-TF1/L – Under 100$
If you want find a waterproof camera for when you swimming/diving/snorkeling in the shallows, the sony DSC-TF1/L is best. it works great underwater and takes great pictures! it can take very good photos in good light situations for a compact camera.
The panoramic mode works great also.I’d recommend this for anyone who likes taking photos but doesn’t want to worry about keeping the camera dry.
- The build quality is very good for the price
- it has Beauty effects and Smile Shutter technology
- It is very easy to use and it can automatically detect which settings to use.
- It is waterproof. Pictures are of adequate quality for a point and shoot.
- The size is just right.
- The display is large enough to get a good gander at what’s being shot.
- It not only takes photos, but also panoramic shots and video as well.
- Accepts the usual MicroSD cards and also some other one called memory stick micro.
- Never have to worry about using in the rain since it’s waterproof.
- There are numerous settings . editing, beauty and picture effects.
- Not only waterproof, but also shockproof and dustproof as well.
- Very compact and ultra-portable. it has an extremely small footprint and will fit nearly anywhere without taking up too much room.
- The battery life is short. It does really kinda suck..
The Sony DSC-TF1/L camera is compact but solid, and is a good value.it under water without any problems and allows you to not worry so much when carrying your camera around on vacation and around water. as a whole the camera is pretty amazing for the price and I do recommend it. If the battery life were longer on it I would have given this 5 stars for sure.

15.Canon Sure Shot A-1 Water Resistant 35mm Camera
I purchased this camera quite a few years ago when I first began getting interested in the underwater photography world. I wanted a good reliable camera that I could take with me on various diving excursions and on trips that I took with my family. I wanted a camera that could do everything I needed so that I didn’t have to be numerous different cameras and I definitely found what I wanted in this camera.
This camera has definitely held up over the years. It has taken some beautiful underwater photos. It has auto correct for underwater photos so that you are sure to catch the best shot in the water. It picks up all of the colors and the details in the water without being cloudy and blurry like some photos I’ve seen from underwater.
I’ve used the wide angle view in a variety of settings including underwater and on dry land. I’ve captured some beautiful photographs of sunsets, mountains, and big city skylines with no problem. It takes the old style 35 mm film which some of us old people will remember using before the digital age. I don’t mind it though because I enjoy using film that I can develop myself.
The Canon Sure Shot A-1 has an extra large viewfinder which I have found to be extremely helpful when wearing my diving gear under the water. The built in flash always works wonderfully and it can adjust to just about any type of lighting situation whether you are deep in the dark sea or in the bright desert sun.
My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed this camera. We have taken it on many trips with us and have captured beautiful photos with it. I do wish that it had a wrist strap with it instead of just a neck strap as the neck strap isn’t always dependable especially when in the water. I thought I had lost this camera at one point when it floated off of my neck while on a dive but luckily I was able to grab it before it disappeared. It would be much easier to be able to hold onto it with a wrist strap.
For the price of this camera it has definitely stood up to the hands of time. It has been through a lot and seen a lot of places. It has been dropped on the hard ground and in the water and still works perfectly. Cleaning it carefully every time you use it plays a big part in how long it lasts.
If you don’t take care of it then you can’t expect it to last for years. The elements of salt water can really wreak havoc on an underwater camera and you have to ensure that you are getting all of the salt cleaned out from it and checking the seal.
If any tiny drop of water gets into a camera, it’s a goner. Maybe eventually I will get a digital camera but for now, I am still enjoying using my Canon Sure Shot A-1.
Waterproof cameras are the greatest for fun loving individuals.
You can have interesting moments recorded during rain dance, scuba diving, swimming, boating, fishing, and a number of other water activities with the watertight camera.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS25
The Panasonic Lumix TS25 is described by many users as the go anyplace camera as it’s streamlined, simple to carry with you. Plus, it’s some fine features that are that good either. It’s regarded a tough camera that could shoot High Definition video and pictures on land and underwater.
The Panasonic TS25 also features Complex Submerged Way which compensates for the reddish colours frequently lost when shooting underwater supplying more natural appearing pictures that are submerged. Along with the photo mode, the TS25 includes a torch light that helps with record videos in submerged surroundings that are dusky or during the nighttime. When not utilizing it to record, it may be utilized as a torch to illuminate the region or others.
The TS25 is tagged as watertight and tough for active lifestyles. It’s watertight to a depth of 23 feet (7 m), shockproof from a drop height of 5 feet (1.5 m), freezeproof to a temperature of 14oF (-10oC) and dust evidence to the IP6X standard.

Nikon COOLPIX AW100
Nikon is a reputable brand and a leader in the market of DSLR cameras, yet they are less competitive in the market of the point-and-shoot. Many of their models are not so good, so I was curious to see how is this waterproof camera.
The surprise is that this camera can compete with the best brands on the market, and this is quite a surprise since this is their first rugged camera. However, they’ve made a great job with it with all the functions needed for a camera of that price. The most direct competitor to this camera is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3, which is also reviewed on this website.
The overall build is good although the camera is made of plastic. I know that many people expect a metal body for a camera of that price but both metal and plastic have positive and negative aspects. Metal is surely tougher but it’s also heavier. The plastic of the AW100 is not the cheap plastic of a $90 camera, it is in fact a good quality plastic and users ar happy about it.
Thanks to the high ISO range up to 3200 and the new 16MP sensor this camera can take grate photos in any condition. Moreover, with the 8GB memory card there’s no reason to shoot at any other setting than the highest resolution. The auto white balance make a great job and the camera is able to take beautiful pictures in any condition.
With full HD and stereo sound you can expect great videos, and indeed that is the case. However, avoid using the zoom while filming as it makes a bad and disturbing nois that will affect your video.
This is the point where the Nikon AW100 seems definitely better than the Panasonic. The GPS works great, it’s quite precise and the GPS data is added to your JPEG image file as EXIF data.
There are different opinions around about the battery life of this camera. The overall impression is that it’s not so good but there are many cameras with this same problem, so if I was you I wouldn’t base my decision on this factor.
The menus are easy to use and don’t have too many options. This is a good news in my opinion but if you want a lot of control over your settings, this is not the camera for you. You can turn off the flash and autofocus assist, and you can adjust exposure compensation. But you can’t manually dial in your own shutter speed or aperture, and there is no bracketing, although the camera does have an HDR scene setting (an option on the Backlit setting).
The buttons of the camera are quite small and too sensitive. This is something I personally don’t like because you’ll find it difficult using the camera if you have big fingers or wear gloves.
The camera also has an annoying lag between pressing shutter release and actually taking the photo. This makes it unsuitable for use in sport mode, where speed is important.
PROS
- Lightweight
- Great ISO range
- High res image
- Very good quality video
- Stereo sound
- Great GPS
CONS
- Battery life under average
- Buttons too small and sensitive
- The Panaonic TS3 seems to be more sturdy and shock resistant
- Lag between pressing shutter release and actually taking the photo
Sealife 12 Megapixel 5X Optical Zoom
The Sealife DC1200 is an incredible waterproof camera. The price and the performance place this camera at the top level of the point and shoot waterproof cameras. If you want more, you’ll have to buy a DSLR camera plus housing, which means not less than $2000.
SeaLife has been creating underwater digital cameras since 2000. They offer a full line of unique underwater cameras and accessories. The best part is that each of the lenses and strobes are interchangeable with any other model of SeaLife cameras.
The camera models are all basic digital cameras that are optimized for use underwater. This allows cameras such as the SeaLife DC1200 to be a great camera without complicated features.
First of all, this is not simply an underwater camera, like the other models on this website. This is a housing with a digital camera inside. If you are new to the world of the underwater cameras, you are maybe wondering why Sealife has made this choice when the other competitors offer much cheaper waterproof cameras.
The reason become apparent if you look at the performance: competitor’s cameras can resist under water up to about 30ft/10m maximum, while the Sealife DC1200 is tested up to 200ft/60m.
So, while every point and shoot underwater camera is good only for snorkeling, this is the only camera of this category suitable for scuba diving.
Sealife offers also a complete solution for scuba diving; camera plus external flash at an affordable price.
A special mention must be made regarding the maintenance of the camera. I’ve decided to add this paragraph to my review because I’ve noticed on the Amazon website that one purchaser complains about this camera. It is my opinion that this person didn’t know that he wasn’t buying an ordinary waterproof camera. First of all, every housing has an O-ring, that is the element that keeps the water out. The O-ring requires a special care, especially if you use the camera in salt water. Every time you finish using your DC1200 (for example at the end of the day) the housing must be opened and the O-ring washed with soft water in order to accurately remove all the salt. The salt crystallizes when it dries and acts like sand on the seal, destroying it. You must have this same care for any housing you buy for any camera, even the cheapest one, if you want to prevent water leakage.
Pros
- The cheapest “with case” underwater camera you can find
- It floats
- If you plan to go a lot in salty water this is the best choice
- Big keys easy to operate even with gloves
Cons
- Someone complained about the white balance
- Need some expertise to be used in its full potential
- There are some complains about photos over exposed. However, as a customer stated, you should read carefully the instructions to be able to manage the exposure. Remember that this camera is made for underwater photography and it is optimized in particular for this use.
Conclusion,To be honest, if you have $2000 to $3000 to spend you’d better buy a DSLR with housing. But if you are a passionate photographer and don’t want to become a professional, the Sealife DC1200 camera will give you performances comparable to a DSLR at less than a third of the price.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3
It has built-in GPS, altimeter, barometer and a compass, and it offers a new 3D mode. It is in fact designed not only for underwater photography, but for any type of outdoor activity.
The GPS Function is really interesting. It can show the name of the Country/Region, State/Prov./County, County/Township, City/Town/Village and Landmark by using the internal data to give users details on where the photos or videos were taken. The area information covers 203 countries or regions for global users.
4 Active Outdoor Scene Modes, LEICA DC Lens with Folded Optics Technology, Newly Developed 12.1-megapixel Hi-speed CCD, Sonic Speed AF, 3D Photo Mode. Waterproof to approximately 40 feet (12m); shockproof to approximately 6.6 feet (2m); freezeproof to 14ºF (-10 degrees C); and dustproof. Probably the engineers at Panasonic were still not happy with these first class features, so they added 1920 x 1080 full-High definition video with a Dolby® Digital Creator so audio quality is also high.
Things to know about the camera
- If used in the sea, remember to soak it in tap water when you are done per the instructions. Then let it dry before opening. Don’t rush it. This advice applies to any underwater camera, not only the Panasonic.
- Buy a CHUMS floatation strap. If you use the camera for snorkeling you won’t risk losing it.
Users of this camera are enthusiast. If you want a superior photo camera to use in any condition this is the best choice.
Pros
- One push button to start and stop the recording. Very easy to operate
- Camera has many advanced functions
- The iA mode make the camera easy to use by anyone
- Full 1080p videos underwater are excellent
- very good battery life if you don’t use GPS
- The anti-blur and motion stabilization work great
- Fast start up. You turn it on and in two seconds it can already take a photo.
Cons
- It is very easy to put your finger in front of the lens or the microphone by mistake.
- Indoor quality could be better
- GPS uses a lot of battery
- GPS isn’t very accurate
Canon Underwater PowerShot D10
If you have a passion for photography I’m sure you’ll love this camera. And you’ll love it even more after the secret I’m going to tell you at the end of this article.
Let’s start with the features. This is a well-made digital camera with a solid metal body and excellent overall finish.
Canon claims this camera is waterproof up to 33ft/10m. It is a great improvement compared to the other point and shoot cameras, however I’m not so sure it’s a so great advantage. It’s quite rare going so deep while snorkeling, and on the other hand when scuba diving you easily go deeper than 10m. However, this is clearly an indication af a solid camera.
The wrist strap is already included in the box, so you don’t have to buy one separately.
This camera has also a 30 fps VGA (640X480) movie mode. It’s not much if compared to the competitors, but I think that we can forgive this, given the quality of all the other features.
The camera has many functions that make it suitable for any kind of user. The automatic functions make it easy to use for anyone, while advanced settings like for example the auto-focus lock will please the more expert photographers.
And now the secret I promised you; if you are a passionate photographer you probably know that one of the strongest points of DSLR cameras is the ability to shoot photographies in raw format. Furthermore, DSLR cameras have many advanced functions, like for example histograms, that point and shoot cameras don’t have. Until now. You’ll be pleased to know that if you are the lucky owner or are going to become the owner of a Canon camera you can have all these advanced functions for free, thanks to the CHDK project.
CHDK stands for Canon Hack Development Kit, and it’s a firmware that you can install on your memory card and will turn your camera in a Super Camera. Challenges of Underwater Photography
Shooting a photograph underwater is not as easy as just pointing a camera and clicking a button. Underwater photography can prove to be much more difficult than taking a photo on dry land and many people may not realize the various challenges that come along with getting a good quality underwater photograph.
Before even attempting underwater photography you should be proficient in basic water safety whether you are in a pool or deep sea diving. If you are diving, you should be experienced at diving procedures because taking a photograph underneath the water can cause unplanned distractions and you want to have the experience needed in case something goes wrong. You should always put your safety first before photography.
Many challenges lie underneath of the water. Various things can play a big role in how good of a photograph that you are able to get in the water. If you are diving deep down into the sea, you will notice that the deeper you go, the darker it gets and you will most likely need special lighting in order to catch the essence and the beauty of sea life. You will need to make sure that if your camera does not include a sufficient enough flash for deep sea photographing, you have another kind of light source such as a strobe light to carry with you, otherwise the photos may turn out cloudy and dark without much color depth to them.
The current also becomes stronger the deeper you go below sea level and this can cause extra pressure on camera equipment while also making it more difficult to hold the camera still to get the perfect photograph. Bubbles and fish swimming around can make that task even more difficult.
If you are planning on taking photos while deep sea diving, be sure to check and see how waterproof your camera is. Most cameras have a depth limit, meaning that once you go past a certain depth, such as 10 feet, the camera may not work any longer. This is something to consider before purchasing an underwater camera because you want a camera that will work at the depth you wish to photograph.
Practice makes perfect. You may have to play around with various settings and lighting to get the perfect shot. You should try various angles with the objects you are trying to photograph. It is best to get up close and personal with the object to get the best quality photo whether it be a fish or colorful coral. Looking through your diving mask, the object may look closer to you than what it actually is through the camera lens, and it will take practice to figure out exactly how to shoot the best photos.
Become familiar with your camera before going underwater so that you know exactly how to get the settings that you need. You don’t want to have to worry about fumbling around with unfamiliar buttons on the camera and miss that perfect shot. Once you learn to overcome all of the challenges and obstacles of underwater photography, you may just become the perfect underwater photographer!
How to Use Underwater Camera To Take Beautiful Photos
After having managed to buy a good underwater digital camera it is necessary to have some basic know-how about filming underwater.
Lighting for the perfect shot, when shooting underwater requires knowledge about the natural light or strobe effects underwater. When at lesser depths than 20 feet and in clear waters it is often best to use the ambient sunlight while an off camera strobe can be most useful under less clear water reducing glare and bluing of the image.
Color contrast determines how true to life the photo comes to the underwater world. To offset problems like muted blue scenes or red-orange tinted disasters, it is better to use off camera strobes rather than flash. Every foot of distance underwater equals 2 feet of bluing effect.
It’s also important to know that wide angle lenses are best for underwater filming because water magnifies images. While zooming in to an image lowers its resolution, keeping close with a wide angle lens reduces that blue effect and captures the highest quality and resolution available.
Once you know how to choose your camera, perhaps you would like to know how to shoot some great photographs to show to friends and family back home.
Nevertheless, there’s something you should know about when taking photos underwater that you are less likely to find easily.
As you probably know, colors below the water tend to turn blue and green. The reason for this is water absorbs long wavelength colors such as red and orange.
There are basically two factors influencing the colors of your subject; depth and distance. With regard to depth, the deeper you are and the more the subject turns blue and green.
If you wish to avoid this problem, you need to stay where you see all the colors, because your waterproof camera will see them as well. Regarding the distance of the subject, the problem is the same as with depth.
A rule of thumb used by professional people in this case is usually to be not more than 3 ft/1 m distant from the subject. My last tip; avoid utilizing the zoom as much as you can.
If you follow the rule of the maximum distance you will not need it, and in any case a wide angle objective can catch more light and your photos will be stunning and vibrant.
The last, very important factor you must consider when you want to take photos underwater is the external light.
If you are a traditional photographer you probably know that the best light for taking photos is early in the morning or late afternoon.
For underwater photography the rule is different, the best moment to take photos is around midday, when the Sun is high and strong and better penetrate the water.
Of course you can use the flash to improve the light, every digital underwater camera has one, so why the Sun is so important?
First of all, the flash can scare the fishes and make them run away or hide.
Moreover, the Sun doesn’t illuminate only the subject, but the entire scene, water included, turning your pictures into something fabulous.

After using in salt water, you need to wash the camera clean, and remove all foreign objects like sand and dirt. Also, to maintain the camera’s waterproof integrity, seals may need to be replaced once a year. Furthermore, these cameras may only be rated at their maximum waterproof depth for a certain amount of time. Every camera will have it’s own particular features to consider.
Waterproof cameras due have some limitations. These cameras generally have a limited zoom because of being behind a sealed case. Zooms will vary per model, but don’t expect the same capabilities of a standard camera. In addition, view finders are not typically standard. You will have to rely on the screen for most waterproof models. This isn’t usually a problem, but you will want to ensure you’re able to view the screen in different lighting situations.
What Should You Look For In Your Camera?
Waterproof cameras aren’t all built alike. Consider why you are buying the camera, and what you intend to use it for. You will have very different needs depending on your activities. If you are going to be using your camera primarily at the beach, it is unlikely that you will need a freeze proof model. Equally so, you don’t likely need a crush proof model for simple hiking outings.
